THE DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES
Here is the 5 main skin types
● Normal skin is balanced and has a regular texture, being smooth and having a soft
appearance.
● Sensitive skin can be prone to redness and itchiness. This type loses its protective skin
barrier, making it easier for reactions and irritants to enter.
● Dry skin can be caused by weather, low air humidity and immersion in hot water. It is
prone to crack leaving it to be exposed by bacteria. Eczema is common in dry skin.
● Oily skin has a porous, humid and bright appearance. This is caused by excessive oil
production by sebaceous glands, often influenced by genetics and hormones.
● Combination skin presents characteristics of both dry and oily skin. Typically, the T-zone
(forehead, nose, and chin) is oily, while the cheeks may be normal or dry.
HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE
The easiest method is the bare-face method:
First, wash your face with a gentle foaming cleanser. Next, gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Avoid applying any skincare products and wait for 25-30 minutes. Now, if your skin feels tight, dry, this suggests dry skin. Excessive shine indicates oily skin. Oily in some areas (like the
T-zone) and dry in others suggests combination skin. Redness or irritation indicates sensitive skin.
Another easy method is blotting-sheet method
First, press a clean blotting paper against various areas of your face. Second, hold the sheet up to light to see the oil absorption. If the paper shows a significant amount of oil, your skin is likely oily. Little to no oil indicates dry skin. Oil in the T-zone suggests combination or normal skin.
