Rosacea

Written by Sheza Kamran

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that causes redness and rashes, usually on the nose and cheeks. It often looks like a blush or sunburn that doesn’t go away.

What is the main contributor to Rosacea?

Experts believe that issues with the blood vessels in the face might be a big reason why people get rosacea. These problems can cause the blood vessels to expand too easily, leading to redness.

Symptoms

● Persistent redness on the face

● Visible blood vessels

● Swollen red bumps

● Burning or stinging sensation

● Dry, or rough skin

● Swollen or enlarged nose also known as rhinophyma in severe cases

Types of Rosacea

● Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea

Symptoms include redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels. Caused by sun exposure,

stress, and certain foods or beverages.

● Papulopustular Rosacea

Symptoms include redness, swelling, and acne-like breakouts. Causes are similar to ETR but

more likely to include specific foods and medications.

● Phymatous Rosacea

Symptoms include thickened skin and a bumpy texture, often affecting the nose. Triggers are

long-term untreated rosacea.

● Ocular Rosacea

Symptoms include red, irritated eyes and swollen eyelids. Triggers accompany other types of

rosacea but specifically affects the eyes.

Treatment

Rosacea has no cure, but these are some treatments that can be used to manage it:

● Topical Medications

Metronidazole helps reduce inflammation and kills bacteria. Azelaic Acid helps reduce swelling and bumps. Brimonidine temporarily reduces redness by constricting blood vessels.

● Oral Medications

Antibiotics such as doxycycline, can reduce inflammation and treat bumps. Isotretinoin can be used for severe cases if unresponsive to other treatments.

Diet and Nutrition: Eating an anti-inflammatory diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can help improve skin health. Staying hydrated is also crucial.

For more information If you suspect you have rosacea, it’s important to consult a dermatologist for an accurate

diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. Dermatologists can provide tailored advice and

prescribe medications or treatments based on the severity and type of rosacea.

Rosacea is common but manageable. Knowing its symptoms, triggers, and treatments can help you control and reduce flare-ups. Always talk to a healthcare professional for personalized

advice and treatment.
