What is Acne?

By skinwfa writer: Kamilah Graciano,

Acne is a prevalent skin ailment that impacts millions of individuals globally. It happens when

dead skin cells and oil clog hair follicles, causing pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads to appear.

Acne is frequently linked to puberty, although it can also occur in adults and have a variety of

causes.

There are two types of Acne, including comedones and inflammatory acne. Comedones are non-

inflammatory acne lesions that may include whiteheads and blackheads.Inflammatory acne,

opposite from Comedones, involves red, swollen pimples that may be painful. These include

papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.

The causes for acne vary. One cause is an excess oil production. Overproduction of sebum

(which is skin oil) can contribute to both types of acne. Secondly, another cause would be

bacteria. Propionibacterium acne, which is a type of bacteria, may further develop acne. Thirdly,

one of the most famous reasons is hormones. Hormonal changes, mostly those during puberty,

pregnancy, or menstruation can trigger acne to becoming more severe. Lastly, genetics plays a

big role in the amount of acne you may have. If your parents had acne, you’re most likely to

have acne too.

Okay, but how can we treat it? Well, acne has several cures. One of the first ways to take care of

acne is having a skincare routine. Gentle cleansing and use of non-comedogenic products help

prevent acne. You may want to consult a dermatologist to give you a perfect routine according to

your skin concerns. Secondly, having a healthy diet plays a key part to how your acne looks,

develops, and how long it takes to go away. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and

whole grains promotes a healthy skin. Another thing you must do, is avoiding triggers. Some

cosmetics or certain foods may worsen acne, even if you love the product or food, you must

avoid it. Lastly, exercising regularly. It can improve blood circulation and help manage stress,

which is linked to acne.

If your acne is worse and does not go away with these things. The next thing you can do is a

consult a doctor. Some may prescribe you a topical treatment. Others may give you oral

medications. While some others will tell you to do a dermatological prescription. Chemical

peels, or laser therapy may help you. Don’t forget to always consult a dermatologist before doing

anything with your skin!

All in all, acne is very common for a human to have. Anyone can have acne, for all types of

reasons. It may be embarrassing, but it is not a thing to fear, for it has solutions. Always be open

to learning more about this incredible topic, which has been spoken about a lot, mostly during

high school years. It is one of the most famous skin conditions.
